Daniel Hill Achieves Significant Victory in Nevada Shield Law Protection

Daniel Hill, associate in the Las Vegas office of Wolf, Rifkin, Shapiro, Schulman & Rabkin, LLP, achieved a significant victory in the upholding of press freedoms provided by the Nevada Shield Law.

Attorneys in a high-profile criminal case sought to subpoena documentary filmmaker Joanna Friedman’s unpublished notes and video interviews with a key witness. Prior to the ruling, the Nevada Shield Law had been applied only to reporters belonging to news organizations. The decision, which came on Thursday, April 21, by District Judge Richard Scotti, extends the press privilege to Friedman, whose work, Hill argued, constitutes reporting. “The case marks the first time a court in Nevada has decided that issue,” said Hill. “It’s a positive outcome for all information gatherers in the state.”
